Lino Lifestyles - 2001
In collaboration with Sharon Beavan and Maggie Jennings
Whitechapel Art Gallery Centenary Commission, London

Lino Lifestyles was commissioned as part of the Whitechapel's Centenary celebrations. The project aim was to create a 'snapshot' of the memories, stories, opinions, ideas and aspirations of our visitors and local residents and generally their experiences of living in East London.

During the first element of the project, I interviewed and visited local residents in their community groups, social centres, in their homes and business, and in the streets of the area surrounding the gallery.

They told me their stories, showed me their pictures, and invited me to share their meals. All these intimate exchanges were recorded in a notebook / diary, that I presented to artists Sharon Beavan (painter) and Maggie Jennings(print maker).

They translated these individual and collective memories into a large-scale (5 x 3 meters) lino print, that was exhibited in the Gallery's foyer during the Centennary exhibition before touring to other local community venues.

Both the print and the diary are now available for general public examination through the Whitechapel Art Gallery Archive.
